The fourth "Nursing" course titled "Elderly Nutrition" of the Health Academy for the Elderly was held on 25 May 2017. Ms. LEE Yik Han, Helen, Dietitian In Charge of Ruttonjee & Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals was invited to talk about nutrition. As diabetes and hypertension are common diseases among the elderly population, Ms. Helen LEE taught students to study carbohydrate and sodium levels contained in different foods, which enhanced students on self-management of their sicknesses. Students also learnt that the extent of diet control is correlated to the health condition of the elders. For elders who suffered from swallowing difficulties and malnutrition, apart from loosen the control on their intake of cholesterol, fat and starch, Ms. Helen LEE added that "concentration of foods" and "food supplements" can be applied to assist these elders in absorbing sufficient energy, so as to improve their health condition.
