After two years of development, the HKMA and the TaoYuan Project team are pleased to announced that The Hong Kong Medical Association CMS 3.0 is born! The HKMA CMS 3.0 is the first Open-Source clinic management software in Hong Kong. It is available to all registered doctors in Hong Kong permanently free-of-charge together with the e-learning kit and full user documentation.
The HKMA CMS 3.0 is designed to be a multi-function platform. In addition to its powerful clinic management functions, it can be upgraded to link up with other medical information systems in Hong Kong in the future. Since our press conference announcement on 6 August 2009, the project team has developed an enhanced version, the HKMA CMS Wuhan by which the doctors can be linked to the Hospital Authority and Department of Health websites for information exchange with a click. The data communication with the Validation Platform was very successful. Since the software use standardized data format, future integration will be much easier. The HKMA CMS can run on Windows, Mac or Linux machines. Both the standard version and the HKMA CMS Wuhan version were released in the launching ceremony.
The HKMA CMS 3.0 Official Launch cum IT Expo was held today at Eaton Hotel Hong Kong. In this afternoon, Professor Hon. Gabriel LEUNG, JP, Under Secretary for Food and Health, Dr. John STRICKLAND, Chairman of the Information Technology Advisory Committee of the Hospital Authority, Mr. Victor LAM, Assistant Chief Information Officer (Business Transformation) of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, Dr. CHEUNG Ngai Tseung, Chief Medical Informatics Officer of the HA, Dr. CHOY Khai Meng, Consultant (Public-Private-Partnership) of Food and Health Bureau, Dr. LEUNG Ka Lau, Member of Legislative Council (Medical), Mr. Carl YAU, Director of ISIA, Dr. CHOI Kin, Immediate Past President of the HKMA, Dr. HO Chung Ping, MH, Chairman of the HKMA Information Technology Committee and Dr. Golden WONG, Committee Member of the HKMA IT Committee, officiated the Launching Ceremony and shared the joy of the birth of this new software with the audiences. We received an overwhelming number of responses with over 200 doctors who wished to come to today's event. Due to the restriction of venue, only some a hundred doctors could attend the function and choose their apposite packages from the recommend IT vendors. Additional IT Expo will be organized in near future to entertain more audiences.
An Open-Source Software is one in which the source code of the program is released to the user. For the doctors using the HKMA CMS 3.0 program, they are no longer confined to the vendor developing the system. Rather, they have a choice of many software vendors for technical support. This Open-Source software will provide business opportunities for IT vendors to provide personalized services to doctors, which will create a win-win situation to both the medical and IT industries.
