Vaccination is an effective way of protecting children against infectious diseases. The Government provides free vaccinations to children in Hong Kong against ten infectious diseases under the "Childhood Immunisation Programme". The Government also subsidises seasonal influenza vaccination to children under the "Childhood Influenza Vaccination Subsidy Scheme". Nonetheless, there are still a few safe and effective vaccines that are not covered by the Government programmes.
To show our concerns about the health of young children, the Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA) is providing the Vaccination Advice for young children aged between 2 and 6 with the vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention though not provided free by the Government.
The HKMA advises parents that they could protect their children with the following effective and safe vaccines. A poster was also printed for the HKMA members, hospitals in Hong Kong and maternal & child health centres and displayed in the MTR trackside poster panels. Parents are encouraged to consult their doctors for more information on these vaccines.
Vaccines that could be given
to children between 2 and 6 years old:
1. Chickenpox Vaccine
2. Pneumococcal Vaccine (13-valent)
3. Influenza Vaccine (Injection annually)
4. Hepatitis A Vaccine
